Pretzel & Stouffer Attorneys Defend Former Wisconsin Police Chief in Discrimination Lawsuit

Pretzel & Stouffer attorneys Miguel A. Ruiz, Cynthia Alkhouja Faccenda and Suzanne M. Crowley successfully defended a former police chief from Beloit, Wis., at an April 2011 trial. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, claimed that the police chief denied the plaintiffs an opportunity to apply to the town’s towing list due to racial discrimination, in violation of the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights, as well as in retaliation for the plaintiffs’ repeated efforts to get on the list. The jury found that the chief had valid non-discriminatory reasons for denying the plaintiffs’ request, even though the race was found to also be a motivating factor in the decision. The plaintiffs were awarded nominal damages of $1.
