Attorney Bio

Brendan is a partner with Pretzel & Stouffer, Chartered, where he focuses on general commercial and civil litigation. Brendan has broad experience successfully representing clients at all stages of litigation in federal and state courts. He has also represented clients before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Illinois Labor Relations Board. Representative matters include breach of contract, professional liability, employment discrimination, retaliatory discharge, consumer fraud and class-action claims.

Brendan has handled complex, multiparty commercial disputes on behalf of major telecommunications providers in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and successfully defended accountants and other professionals in federal and state malpractice cases. He recently obtained numerous outright dismissals in cases filed against accounting professionals. Among them was a $40-million malpractice claim against a local accounting firm.

In addition, Brendan has successfully represented clients in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In one case, he achieved summary judgment against a trustee, eliminating approximately $750,000 in claims of the bankruptcy estate. The outcome enabled Brendan’s client to resolve the case for less than the cost of defense.

Before joining Pretzel & Stouffer, Chartered, Brendan was a prosecutor with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office from 1998 to 2003, where he tried numerous bench and jury trials. He also briefed and argued several appeals in the Illinois Appellate Court.

Brendan was a law clerk for Justice Michael J. Gallagher of the Illinois Appellate Court, 1st District. Brendan is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and is a past chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division Criminal Justice Committee.
