Attorney Bio

Jim has spent 20 years at Pretzel & Stouffer, Chartered. He focuses on civil defense litigation, primarily in the areas of construction and product liability, in federal and state courts. Jim’s practice includes the representation of owners, general contractors and subcontractors sued by workers who allege they were injured on projects due to safety violations. He also represents propane companies, propane cylinder manufacturers, manufacturers of industrial equipment and orthopedic implant manufacturers who are alleged to be responsible, due to negligence or strict product liability, for injuries arising from the use of their products.

Before practicing law, Jim was a Local 11 roofer who worked for one of the largest roofing and sheet metal contractors in the Chicago area. He also ran a small propane business that provided service exclusively to the construction and roofing industries. Jim remains involved with the propane industry, and he has served as counsel to committees of some of the industry’s associations.

Outside of work, Jim is an avid golfer. His time on the course is significantly limited, however, by his four athletic children, whom he would rather watch play basketball, soccer and volleyball.
