Matthew J. Egan has substantial experience in complex civil litigation as a trial lawyer and as appellate counsel. He has tried a wide variety of cases to verdict in state and federal court, as well as before Illinois’ various administrative agencies. He has also briefed and argued dozens of cases before courts of review in Illinois, including the Illinois Supreme Court.
Mr. Egan began his legal career with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, working as an assistant state’s attorney and a special assistant state’s attorney in the criminal appeals division, and then joined the Chicago Regional Counsel’s Office of Hartford Insurance Company as trial and appellate counsel.
Mr. Egan joined Pretzel & Stouffer in 1988 and was elected a partner in 1991. He serves on the firm’s executive, finance and ethics committees.
In addition to his work at the firm, Mr. Egan has actively served the legal profession through the Illinois Supreme Court’s Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission. He served as a member of the ARDC Inquiry Board from 1989 to 1991, and has served as a member of the ARDC Hearing Board since 1991. Mr. Egan has presented continuing legal education seminars on professional ethics and on the defense of legal malpractice and other professional liability claims, as well as client-education seminars on the defense of wrongful death cases, the defense of construction injury and construction defect cases and on significant developments in Illinois law. He has also drafted legislation and testified before Illinois Senate and House committees about legislation regarding claims against insurance producers and firms.
